The City of Charleston’s Spring/Fishburne US 17 Drainage Improvements Project will alleviate flooding in parts of two drainage basins covering approximately 500 acres, or about twenty percent of the Charleston peninsula. The project includes construction of four access shafts, 7,250 ft. of deep stormwater conveyance tunnels, eight adit tunnels to existing drilled drop shafts and near surface collection system. Major challenges included working in historic, densely populated neighborhoods and construction along the West Ashley river in an active flood plain located within the Atlantic Hurricane basin.
